Health Care Aide – Independent Living Assistant

About the Job

The Health Care Aide (Independent Living Assistant) plays an important role in supporting residents and maintaining a welcoming environment at St. Michael’s Manor. The position combines resident assistance with housekeeping, meal service, safety, and general support duties.

Key Responsibilities

  • Follow facility policies, procedures, safety requirements, and applicable regulations.
  • Remind or assist residents with taking prepared medications according to their care plans and assigned responsibilities.
  • Respect residents’ independence, dignity, privacy, choices, and individual preferences.
  • Provide and receive information during shift changes.
  • Review staff communication records and resident information when required.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment for residents, staff, and visitors.
  • Assist residents with laundry and housekeeping duties.
  • Help prepare dining areas, serve meals, and clean dining areas after meals.
  • Assist with kitchen duties, including washing dishes, sweeping, mopping, and storing supplies.
  • Keep entrances, walkways, parking areas, and outdoor grounds clean and free of debris.
  • Follow infection-control procedures and workplace safety requirements.
  • Assist with the orientation of new employees when required.
  • Inspect guest suites for damage when residents or guests arrive and depart.
  • Assist with resident or tenant move-ins and move-outs.
  • Collect payments for guest meals and provide receipts as required.
  • Support group recreation activities when directed.
  • Report changes in residents’ condition or planned absences to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Participate in staff training and professional development programs.
  • Maintain positive and respectful relationships with residents, families, coworkers, and external organizations.
  • Maintain confidentiality of work-related and resident information.
  • Promote a safe environment for residents, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Perform other related duties assigned by the Supportive Services Supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a recognized Health Care Aide program.
  • Active registration with the CLHA.
  • Previous housekeeping or meal-service experience is an asset.
  • Previous caregiver experience is an asset.
  • Friendly personality with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to perform the physical and mental requirements of the position.

Resident Support

Housekeeping and Meal Service

Outdoor areas such as entrances, walkways, parking areas, and grounds may also need to be maintained to help provide a safe and comfortable environment.
